Things to Consider before Buying an Electric Chain Hoist
One of the most common forms of hoists used in a workshop environment is an Electric Chain Hoist.
Electric Hoists are not created equal. As they can be a reasonable size investment, some time needs to be taken to be ensure that you consider the following when looking at what type of Electric Hoist is right for your application. Points to consider can include:
-
Weight of the LoadÂ
Goes without saying that you need to know what the maximum load is that you are going to be lifting with the hoist
-
Height of Lift and Lifting SpeedÂ
If you have a high lift requirement then the lifting speed is very important. You want productivity to be increased with an electric hoist, not take forever to do the task. If your need to have fine placement of items, then a dual speed hoist which has a slow operating speed is more suited to your operation
-
Duty CycleÂ
In line with the weight of the load, you need to know how often your hoist will be running per day. You will also need to know how often you will be planning to do lifts that are close to the maximum capacity of the hoist.  If you plan to be using your hoist consistently during the entirety of a shift, day after day, then it is recommended that you spend time evaluating the pros and cons of different hoists on the market. If this is your situation, then cheaper will definitely not be better
-
Power SourceÂ
Firstly, you will need to determine what power source is available in your workshop. If you are looking for a large capacity hoist but you only have single phase available then you may need to look at a different power source such as Air. When there is a high or heavy duty cycle then a 3 phase hoist is recommended
-
Environment
Whether the hoist is going to be used indoors or outdoors will be a big factor in the choice of hoist. In some applications, such as the entertainment industry, the colour and quietness of operation is essential
-
HeadroomÂ
The amount of headroom you have available in your workshop will play a part in the decision making process. You may have to look at purchasing a low headroom hoist that is close coupled to to a trolley
-
