Pre Use Safety Harness Inspection
What do you need to know about pre use harness inspection?
It goes without saying that you need to have completed your working at heights course so that you are familiar with how to use your harness and perform a pre use inspection.
First of all you need to know where the harness come from. Ensure that the item has a visible tag and that the relevant details are legible, including the identification/serial number. Traceability is extremely important. If you cannot find the origins of the harness from its tag, then you need to look for another harness to use.
The webbing across the safety harness needs to be checked for cuts, tears, abrasions and discolouration.
When checking buckles, adjusters and attachment links look for deformation, damage such as sharp edges, corrosion, cracks and check the functionality. Does it do what it should?
The all important stitching should be checked for any parts which are missing, incomplete, damaged or frayed.
If you do not understand what is an acceptable level of damage, then you should look at doing some further training. Refer your current inspection to a competent person.
